The Encyclopedia of American Food & Drink, that authoritative voice on such subjects, says that the Club Sandwich likely originated near the middle of the 19th century at the Saratoga Club, an upscale gambling den in Saratoga, New York. The Sandwich soon became a fixture at other men's Club throughout America with the first printed description appearing in a New York magazine soon near the beginning of the 20th century. A major debate nevertheless exists as to whether the original Sandwich included two or three slices of toast, with one writer calling the three-slice Sandwich a "horror."

Despite this debate, the classic construction Club Sandwich arguably involves three slices of toast (white or brown) slathered with mayonnaise and containing turkey, bacon, lettuce and tomato. The quality of your Club will depend on the ability to move forward from there.
