leather
- What at you looking at? – I ask.
- The leather on your pants – he says.
- There’s no leather on the back of my pants.
- Well… my eyes see leather on the back of your pants – He gives me a smirk.
I am second in line to pay at the gas station. I have my hair on a ponytail exposing my neck, and it raises the skin on my entire body when I feel a breeze on the base of my hairline. When I turn around, I see two green eyes looking at me from above, from a very above.
I turn my back with insolence but I feel he keeps staring – I imagine his eyes like a laser beam up and down the back of my body. As the line moves, the girl behind the counter excuses for a second.
- I just need to take the pastries out of the oven – she says.
- No problem; take your time – he responds from behind.
I turn around and I give him one of my looks – not one of the good ones, but it has zero effect.
He smiles, his lips spreading over a set of nice teeth, his face lighting up. Man! He is tall! During the three – make it six – seconds I stare at him I see a white shirt, a leather jacket with the collar up and a stylish pair of jeans.
The loaf of bread and the two cartons of milk he is holding I don’t see.
I advance one step towards the counter to pull away. My knees are pressing now against all the chewing gums and my belly against chocolates.
Give me some space.
- Number 4, the grey car – I say with a threat of voice.
The girl is behind the counter again.
When I bow my head to take the credit card out of the wallet, I feel again a warm breath on the back of my head, so close moist materializes where the bone on the neck points the most.
My belly is melting the chocolate bars.
I squeeze to the side and I bang uncontrollably several pack of candy. I nervously apologize and I hurry to pick up the stuff from the floor. He kneels next to me and helps, and even though I don’t look at him, I can see his teeth smiling.
My wallet is on the floor, my name on the credit card peeking out.
- Nice name – he says.
I feel my heart banking and sweat stopping where my bra ties a bow.
- I will find you – I hear as I am running out to the car – I would like to see more of that leather on the back of your pants.
Are you kidding me?
A last peak and I see he is waiving good bye with his nice-shaped eyebrows and a full smile.

Kids are in bed; I check a couple of mails from work while I open a bottle of wine.
As I am writing down a mental note to self to call my parents, the phone rings.
I lift the phone but I don’t recognize the number.
I would like to see more of that leather on the back of your pants.
I put the phone down on the counter again, I let it ring, and I swallow the entire glass of wine.
