The celebration of 25th December is far older than Jesus.

The celebration originated in ancient as the festival of the birthday of the god Aion or Osiris. The celebration of Christmas also partly originated from the cult of the roman god Saturn (Greek; Chronos) on the 17th of December. On this occasion people lit candles, slaves were given liberties and presents were exchanged. Around 400BC this celebration was moved to the last part of December. It melted in the first century BC together with the hugely popular celebration of the personified sungod Mithra on the 25th of December. The Christian church “stole this date 353AD and changed it into a celebration of the birth of Jesus instead.

In northern Europe the Germanic people in the iron age had a big pagan fertility celebration at this time. In the darkest period of the year they celebrated the turning of the sun. They called it Jol. (jul, noel, yule), and the main issue was to drink, eat and rejoice. In the Norse sagas its called "to drink jol". Drinking was obviously important. In Scandinavia Christmas is still called "Jul".
