Anniekins Skrevet 1. mars 2009 #22 Skrevet 1. mars 2009 Hello everyone! I'm writing in English because of the lack of shortcuts on my English keybord. Sorry - it's taking ages to write in Norwegian. Maybe next time I'll make much more of an effort and hustle up somethin in norsk. A quick comment: My English fiance and I plan to marry in Norway and wish to incorporate both Norwegian and English customs in our wedding. One that we will adopt is the ancient tradition of having multiple bridesmaids and best men. I think that brudepiker and brudesvenner mainly refer to flower girls and page boys and as far as I am aware they don't have much of a function besides looking very cute. However bridesmaids (which can be unmarried females of any age) and maid of honor (married female of any age) and best men did have a very important function in the good old days. People were generally very superstitious and concerned with avoiding the Evil Eye (of the Devil). This was especially important at weddings where one hoped the bridal couple would be blessed with good fortune. Efforts would be made to fool the Devil so that the Evil Eye would not come to rest upon the bride or groom. This would include dressing several women - including the bride - in identical outfits to make the bride indistinguishable from her bridesmaids. The same would apply to the men, including the groom. The tradition involving the bride dressed in white was later introduced, but part of the ancient custom remains. We are actually thinking of making some kind of leaflet to pass out to all our guests which will explain the different traditions we're adopting. Anyone thinks this might be a good idea given an equal mix of Norwegian, English and American guests? Thanks for reading my rambling post and if there are any typos - sorry, can't do withouth spell check these days=)
