Hello,

Can someone please tell me why there is no ultralyd in Norway until the 18th week?
I mean, isnt it ok to be sure that everything is ok? Imagne if there are some complications?

Why does Norway way until the 18 th week?

Cause Norway likes to save money. They are planning to make it official to have ultrasound in 12th week very soon though. If you have specific conditions you get a ultrasound in the 12th week already. Like obesity or if you have had some miscarriage before. “Normal” women have to wait until 18th week.

You can always set up a private ultrasound earlier if you like to. I think the private ones are more professional than the public. The private takes time to explain what you can see, the public ones just get done with it as fast as possible.

It will be a offer in week 12, but until they start ordering that, you need to go to a private doctor to do UL before week 18.

Public health care offers ultrasound in week 18, yes, but there's nothing to keep you from using a private practice clinic earlier if you want. Of course, you'll have to pay more.

Because public health in Norway is more preoccupied with saving money than doing screening

If something is wrong there is really not much you can do. So from an economical view early, or regular, ultrasounds are really just to comfort the parents-to-be. Hence, considered a wrong priority in a political system where healthcare is free of charge, as you instead can spend the money saving lives or treating illness in other areas.

But there are several private options, and prices are not to bad.

With the chance of sounding cynical, you can abort the fetus? Better to do that earlier than later should one want to.

The risk for the mother is about the same.

But as to mentally stress - totally agree.

You can have ultrasound as early as you want, you only have to pay for it:) It's quite common to go to a private gynecologist as well as the 18-week screening at the hospital:)

Like mentioned, soon free (aka state-sponsored). ultrasound in week 12 will be available for all, but untill then extra free ultrasounds are only for at-risk pregnancies.

You can have a private ultrasound early if you want to. I didn't do that myself, but if you're really concerned or curious I think it's worth the money spent.

I think it really depends who's attending you at the public hospital. At my first ordinary ultrasound I had a great woman who told me what we saw the whole time, told me everything looked fine and made me really calm and relaxed. It was earlier this year, so my partner couldn't come, but we called him on facetime. Then she explained it all over again to him what we were looking at, she was very patient and it was all a great experience. At my last ultrasound the father could finally come along, but this time we got a lady that was quiet almost the entire time, and it annoyed me a lot since it was his first time being there. I've also went to a private one, and the lady there was super nice and professional, so it might be right that you're more guaranteed to have someone nice when going private, but some of the public ones are also great.

You mean if you have that option, or do you mean if there is a risk of abortion due to the ultrasound?

Both actually, but there is a really low risk of miscarriage due to early ultrasound, and if so it probably would have happened anyway.

In Norway, women have the right, and privilege, to decide on an abortion until the 12th week. after this you must apply to a tribunal for late abortion which can be done week 17 + 6 (18th week) Most people are granted late abortion, but there must be social, family or health reasons for late abortion.

Which can be done within going in to week 17 + 6. Between 12th and 18th (the late abortion)
